Dubuque Weekly Times, October 24, 1861.

LINN COUNTY-

Merritt’s own county, old Linn, where he was expected to receive so large a majority, has been heard from and the result is, that Kirkwood’s majority is 425, being an actual loss of one vote since the last election, and that one was undoubtedly the vote of Van Meter, editor of the Valley Times, who sold his birthright for the nomination of Sheriff and is defeated by 750!-the worst whipped man on the ticket. Milburn and Young, Republicans, are elected to the Legislature by an average majority of more than 350. (Davenport Gazette)
