There was an Anti-Horse Thief Society in southern Lee County. The one I heard about was in the Ambrosia, Montose/Des Moines township area. Being a paid member, allowed you to have a sign stating that your horses were protected. If your horse was stolen, this group would hunt down the thief and return your horse.

Possibly the society protected horse also. My husband was told that the society burned a cross in the yard of an area man who was cruel to his horses.
