Where do I start???

My fiance and I have somewhat started a project with his children of looking for any genealogical facts and items we can find. We recently decided to start this, so we haven't gotten very far. I have looked on the internet for records from Lee County, IA, but have come up with no leads.

One thing I do know is that my fiance's family farm, owned by the Stein's is located just north of Farm 1 in the northern part of Fort Madison. I'm not sure exactly what township that would have been at any given time. The farm was built approximately sometime in the 1840's I believe.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on how to conduct my search, and if anyone has information, please don't hesitate to contact me.
