Ludwell Washington Dean, one of the city's most highly respected colored residents, passed away at his home, 1318 Exchange street, at 7:00 o'clock this morning, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Dean had been in poor health for several years, and this, combined with a recent attack of grippe, was responsible for his death.

The decedent had been a resident of Keokuk for nearly a half century and he was well known throughout the city and possessed many friends both among the white and colored people of Keokuk. For many years he was employed as a driver at Reiner Bros. grocery.

Mr. Dean was born in Clark county, Mo., on May 5, 1848, and would have been sixty-eight years of age next month. He came to Keokuk when a young man. He was married here on Feb. 17, 1914. His wife, Mrs. Isabelle Dean survives. There are no children. The other survivors are a brother, Daniel J. Dean, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Carrie Dean of this city and a nephew, Joseph Robinson of Hawkins, Ia. The decedent was a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist church.
