HARLAN, Esther A.

Esther Alice Harlan, 92, of Keokuk, IA, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at the River Hills Village in Keokuk, IA.
She was born August 12, 1909, in Jefferson County, IA, the daughter of Maude I. Shelman. On February 4, 1928, she was married to Howard H. Harlan in Monmouth, Il. He preceded her in death on May 16, 1989. They celebrated 61 years of marriage.
She obtained a teaching certificate and prior to having a family taught at Crackerneck country school. Her adult life was spent as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She lived in Hillsboro, IA, until 1943, and then lived in Burlington, IA, until November, 1973. At that time, Esther and Howard retired to Ft Pierce, FL and resided there for a period of ten years. For health reasons, she moved to Rocky Mount, MO in April 1984 and remained until November 1994. She then moved to Keokuk, IA where she lived with her daughter.
She was a member of churches in each city and most recently of Fellowship Bible Church in Eldon, MO. She was a lifelong member of Royal Neighbors of America.
Mrs Harlan is survived by one son, H. Eugene Harlan of Anderson, IN; one daughter, Helen K. Martin of Keokuk, IA; four grandchildren, Greg (Nancy) Harlan of Haddonfield, NJ, Lori (Patrick) Cole of Greentown, IN, Kim (Jim) Boyd of Keokuk, IA, Kirk (Karen) Brandt of Davis, CA; three step grandchildren, Ray L. Martin Jr of Keokuk, IA, Rhonda (Russ) Acton of Wever, IA, Kevin (Cindy) Martin of Montrose, IA; eleven great grandchildren; and five step great grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Cochran of Long Island, NY and Les Cochran of Burnside, MN; one sister, Barbara (Harold) Garmoe of Burlington, IA; two sisters-in-law, Eva Harlan of Mt Pleasant and Lola Belle Sainsbury of Hillsboro, IA: numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by her mother, three brothers, Glen, Bernard and Marshall Cochran, one sister Dorothy Switzer, one son-in-law, Raymond L. Martin Sr, two grandchildren, Kristine Anne and Kenneth Harlan Brandt.
Graveside services will be held at 11am Tuesday, June 18, in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, IA with Pastor Craig Burton officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow the graveside services.
Visitation will be held after 1pm Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with family meeting with friends from 6-8 pm
A memorial has been established for the Evangelical Free Church of Keokuk.
