John R. Fowler County Pioneer

His Death Occurred Last Night at His Home in Sandusky Where He Had Lived for Many Years.

He Came to This Country as a Young Man, and Settled in Vicinity of Keokuk After He Was of Age.

John Roberts Fowler, pioneer resident of Lee County, died at his home in Sandusky last evening. He was a resident of Lee County since 1852, having come to Keokuk in that year. He was a native of England, coming to America in 1851, and coming to Keokuk from St. Louis where he had spent one year.

Mr. Fowler was born in Stokes, St. Millbough, Shropshire, England, January 7, 1833. he was the son of John R. and Harriet (Hammond) Fowler. He came to the United States with his parents on a sailing vessel in 1851. The voyage lasted seven weeks. The family landed in New Orleans and came on to St. Louis, where Mr. Fowler lived for a year.

In 1852 he moved to Keokuk and when he bacame of age, he purchased a farm near Sandusky which has been his home since. He was married in 1860 to Esther Anna McChord. There were seven children, of whom there are living the followng: Edward M. Fowler, J.C. Fowler, Mrs. O.A. Bossler, Mrs. Edward Atterberg all of Keokuk and vicinity. Mrs. Fowler's death occurred December 9, 1917.

Besides the children there are two brothers, Edwin Fowler of Sandusky, and James Fowler of Alameda, Calif., and one siser, Mrs. Emma Parker of Keokuk. There are also seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the home, with interment in Sandusky cemetery.
