Mrs. Unger’s Death Occurs This Morning
Former Teacher in Keokuk Schools Dies at Her Home, 802 Blondeau Street, at 9:30a.m. After Long Illness
Mrs. Nellie Merriam Unger, well-known resident of Keokuk, died at her home, 802 Blondeau street, at 9:30a.m. today after an illness of five months. Her serious illness was only two weeks duration, however.
Nellie Merriam Unger was born in Keokuk and graduated from the Keokuk high school at the age of 15 years. Later she taught for five years in the public schools.
In 1888 she was united in marriage with E.J. Unger, whom she survives.
At a later date she resumed her studies winning two college degrees, M.D. and A.B. She taught several years in Colorado and California, a part of the time in the Indian service.
Fourteen years age she returned to Keokuk and has been tutoring. Latin was her specialty and in this subject she was highly proficient.
As a young girl she joined the Baptist church and remained an ardent member of this denomination.
Surviving her are a brother, George S. Merriam, and a sister, Miss Emily Merriam, both of Keokuk. There is also a nephew, Bernard W. Merriam and two grand nieces and a grand nephew. The funeral will be held from the Keokuk Funeral Home at 2:30p.m. Saturday.
