Walter (Bing) Hanson dies after Extended Illness
Walter (Bing) Hanson Jr. of 1426 High Street died at 3:10 am today in the Graham hospital where he had been a patient since July 23. He had been in poor health for the last 14 months and seriously ill for eight months.
The son of Walter M and Laura Hagerty Hanson he was born in Keokuk July 17, 1920. On June 9, 1944 in Reno Nev he married Alice Bland who survives.
During World War II he served in the Navy enlisting December 15, 1941 and received his discharge September 7, 1945 at which time he held the rating of Sonarman 2/C. He served overseas three years in both the Pacific and Atlantic theatres on the USS Rowan and the USS Guest, destroyers and the USS Connelly, a destroyer escort.
He was a member of the Keokuk national guard company until last March when he received is discharge because of his health. He was a cook with the unit and will be remembered by many as one of the men who helped with the pancakes when the Busines and Professional Women’s club held their annual Pancake Day on Main Street.
Employed by the Union Electric Company, as a meter reader, he was a member of Local 1439 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He also was a member of the Keokuk lodge of Elks.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters, Laura Janet and Linda Joyce at home, his father Walter M. Hanson Sr., two sisters Mrs. Frank Green Jr of Warsaw Ill, Mrs. P. J. Jeffers of Vincennes a brother Edward (Bud) Hanson of Keokuk and other relatives.
The body will remain in the Schmidt Memorial Home until Wednesday noon when it will be taken to the Trinity Methodist church for the funeral at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Roy W. Pfaff officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
