John Opstelten dies in Denver (July 3, 1942)
Was a resident of city 57 years
Rites here Monday
John Opstelten 74 of 1528 Morgan Street died at 8 o'clock last night at Denver, Colo. where he and Mrs Opstelten had been visiting with their son , George E Opstelten. He had been a resident of Keokuk for the past 57 years.
Mr Opstelten was born on March 22, 1868 at Aalst, Bomlerwaard, Netherlands and came to the US when he was seventeen years old. He came directly to Keokuk at that time and has since made his home here. He was married here on April 24,
1894 to Christina Patterson, who survives.
For several years Mr. Opstelten was emplyed at the Wilkinson drug store and later at the Midwest Carbide plant. More recently he had been employed at the Rubber Industries plant.
He was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church.
Surviving besides his widow and son in Denver are a daughter Mrs. Edward Hoffman, two grandchildren, Joseph and George Opstelten Jr., one brother Al Opstelten of Keokuk and two sisters Mrs. Lena Jacobs and Mrs Peter Blom both of Keokuk.
The body will arrive in Keokuk on Sunday and will be removed to the residence 1528 Morgan St where funeral services will be at 3 o'clock on Monday afternoon.
