Geo. Leighton Succumbs to Long Illness

Resident of Lee County for Fifty-nine Years, Dies at the Home of His Son Here This Morning at 2:30 o'clock.

George J. Leighton died at the home of his son, Louis Leighton, 1718 Missouri avenue, this morning at 2:30 o'clock after an illness of two months with complications of diseases. He had been in poor health for the past three years.

Mr. Leighton was born in Illinois on October 5, 1851, and was the son of George and Mary English Leighton. Fifty-nine years ago he came to Lee county and has lived here since. He was a retired carpenter and bridge builder.

On March 31, 1875, he was united with Mary Ellen Harmon who died on September 5, 1930. Thirteen children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy.

He was a member of the M. P. [Methodist Protestant] church.

Surviving him are the following children: Mrs. David Washburn, Mrs. Pearl Starr, Mrs. Russell Jones, Mrs. George Murphy, and Louis Leighton all of Keokuk; Mrs. James Washburn of Canton, Mo.; Mrs. Abel Brown of Alexandria, Mo.; Mrs. Andy Kingsley of Stanton, Neb.; A.M. Leighton of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Margaret Butterfield of Casey, Iowa. There are also thirty-six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

The body will remain at the Cunningham-Melster funeral parlors until time for the funeral services which will be held at the M.P. [Methodist Protestant] church Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
