Mrs. Leighton Dies At Home Here Suddenly

Mrs. Mary Ellen Leighton, of 1614 Williams Street, Dies There Yesterday Afternoon After Brief Sickness

Mrs. Mary Ellen Leighton died at her home, 1614 Williams street, yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock very suddenly. Complications was given as the cause of her death.

Mrs. Leighton was born on October 9, 1857, in Fulton county, Ill., and was the daughter of Leroy and Emma Louder Harmon. Practically all of her life has been spent in Keokuk.

On March 31, 1875, she was united in marriage with George Leighton. Thirteen children were born to this union, three of whom preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Methodist Protestant church.

Surviving besides her husband are the following children: Mrs. Edith Washburn, Mrs. Myrtle Jones, Mrs. Mable Murphy, Mrs. Iva Starr and Louis Leighton, all of Keokuk; Mrs. A. C. Brown of Alexandria, Mo., Mrs. James Washburn of Gregory, Mo., Mrs. Margaret Butterfield of Casey, Iowa; Mrs. Andrew Kingsley of Stanton, Neb., and Aura M. Leighton, of Chicago, Ill. There are also six sisters, Mrs. Alice Gerhardt, Mrs. Ada Bunch and Mrs. Edward Lewis, all of Keokuk; Mrs. Charles Whitehead, of Montrose, and Mrs. Emma Jones and Mrs. Anna Happy, both of St. Louis, Mo. There are also thirty-three grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

The body will remain at the Cunningham funeral parlors until time for the funeral services which will be held from the M.P. church Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Burial will be in the Mound cemetery.
