Sept 24, 1919 - Algona Upper Des Moines - Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schreiber received word Sunday that their son, George, had been shot in Sioux City Saturday night about 12:30. They, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Schreiber, autoed to that place Sunday afternoon to be at his bedside. Their daughter, Sister Olympia, of Odebolt arrived Monday morning.

They found him in a serious condition. He told the following story of the tragedy. He was on his way to his room when three men in an automobile drove up and, pointing revolvers at him, ordered him to throw up his hands. This he did and told them to take everything he had but not to shoot. What made them shoot is a mystery. He was shot in the back, so must have been going away from them. Several arrests have been made in connection with the affair but it is not known whether any of them are the ones wanted.

Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Schreiber and the father, Joseph, arrived home Monday. Late reports are that Mr. Schreiber is holding his own. He is paralyzed in the lower part of his body. His many friends are hoping to hear good news regarding his condition.

The following account of the affair is taken from the Sioux City Journal of Monday, September 15: "George Schreiber, 1214 Pierce street, the victim of a gunman's bullet early yesterday morning when he was shot while escaping from three highwaymen at Thirteenth and Jackson streets, is in a critical condition, it was said last night at St. Vincents hospital.

"Schreiber was wounded in the back, under the right shoulder blade. The bullet lodged in the spinal cord, paralyzing the lower part of Schreiber's body. An operation was performed yesterday in an attempt to remove the bullet, but it was so deeply imbedded in the spinal column that the surgeons did not dare to attempt its removal. In order to alleviate the pressure, a portion of the bone was removed.

"Schreiber, a traveling salesman for the Sibley-Hess company, is about 30 years of age. His parents reside at West Bend, Iowa.

"The wounded man was robbed while on the way to his room at the A R. Davies home, 1214 Pierce street. His assailants, three men, escaped in a high powered limousine car, for which the police are still searching, having obtained a description of the machine from a pedestrian who witnessed their escape."
