Nov 6, 1929 - Algona Upper Des Moines - Mrs. Henry J. Plathe died at her home in this city Monday, October 28, following an illness of several months. Catherine S. Lucas was born at Luxemburg, Dubuque county, Iowa, June 28, 1858 and was seventy-one years of age at her death. She grew to womanhood in Dubuque county and on February 22, 1881, was united in marriage to H.J. Plathe of New Vienna. In 1890, they moved to a farm near Bode, where they lived until 1920 then they moved to Algona, which had since been her home. Here she spent her last days of happiness and contentment, enjoying the frequent visits of her children and grandchildren of whom she was especially fond.

She leaves besides the sorrowing husband, seven children, namely: Mrs. H.H. Thilges, Mrs. P.J. Mertz, Mrs. J.B. Mertz, and Herman and Charles B., all of whom live in this vicinity; Mrs. E.J. Reilly of Janesville, Wisconsin, and Barbara, who lives in Detroit.

She was one of a family of 12 from Dubuque, Iowa and is survived by 3 brothers: Thomas, PJ, & Nick Lucas from Dubuque and three sisters: Mrs Susan Schaff of Remsen, IA, Mrs B Plathe of Grenville, IA, Mrs AL Diers of Carroll, IA. One son Edward died in Albert Lea, MN in 1922.

Requiem high mass was said by Father Doyle, during the absence TJ Davern at St. Cecelia church and Father Doyle also conducted burial service at St. Joseph. The pall bearers were grandsons, Walter, Roy, Harry and Herman Thilges, Bernard and Harvey Mertz.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Herman Plathe, Mrs. Mary Kienitz and son, Al, Mr. and Mrs. R. Greenan, Richard and Nicholas Plathe., of Granville, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. AL Diers, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schenkelberg, Henry and John Singsank, Henry Halbur, Geneva Mertz and Bernadine Plathe of Carroll, Iowa.

We cannot tell who next may fall.
Beneath the chastening rod;
One must be first
So let us all prepare to meet our God.
