April 4, 1968 - Kossuth County Advance - Matthew Hilbert, 92, retired farmer, died Saturday afternoon, March 30, at the Good Samaritan Home. Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecelia's Catholic church with Msgr. P.P. Gearen officiating. Burial was in the St. Joe cemetery, the Hamilton funeral home, Algona, in charge. Pallbearers were Ivan Kohlhaas, Gordon Hilbert, Bernard Becker, Robert Hilbert, Donald Hilbert and Gary Ludwig.

Matthew Hilbert was born Feb. 12, 1876 at Bellevue, la. He came to Humboldt county at the age of three with his parents, Arnold and Susanne Zeimet Hilbert, and to the St. Joe area about 1900. He was married to Mary Besch Nov. 24, 1897 at St. Michael's church, Whittemore. They farmed until 30 years ago when he retired and they moved to Algona. Mrs. Hilbert died in September of 1950. Mr. Hilbert had lived at the rest home since August, 1967.

Three sons and three daughters survive: Mrs. Clara Kohlhaas, Algona; John, Ted and Frank, St. Joe; Dora, Mrs. Tom Becker, Wesley, and Laura, Mrs. Herman Becker, Irvington. One sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Elbert, Whittemore, also survives. There are 24 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren.
