January 20, 1905 - Livermore Gazette: News was received last Friday that Nick Decker, living west of St. Joseph, while skinning a beef that he had butchered, let the knife slip, and plunged the sharp instrument into his leg half way between the knee and hip, cutting the large artery, from which he bled to death.
That anybody should meet death in such a manner seemed almost incredible, from the fact that almost anybody would contrive in some way to bind the leg above the wound and stop the flow of blood; but we have been told later, which seems more plausible, that the wound was in the groin, and therefore difficult, except for a physician or somebody of experience, to get at. Physicians were summoned from Bode and Ottosen but arrived too late to save him.
The funeral was held at St. Joseph last Monday. Mr. Decker was well known in St. Joe and surrounding country. He leaves a wife and two children.
