Charles Rutherford, 81, of What Cheer, died Feb. 28, 2003, at Montezuma Nursing and Rehab Center.

Services were March 4 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with the Rev. John De Boef and Rev. David Rogula officiating. Interment will follow at the Garrett Cemetery near Delta.

Charles was born July 24, 1921 in Harmon, Okla. the son of Charlie and Dora Ozborn Rutherford. Shortly after birth he moved to What Cheer in the same covered wagon he was born in. He was then reared in What Cheer and attended school until the 8th grade. After finishing school he moved in with the Van Pattens and worked for them at heir salvage yard. In 1942 he entered WW II where he served in the Alleutians Islands.

In 1945 he was discharged from the service and started his own salvage business in What Cheer. Charlie was the What Cheer Fire Chief from 1963 to 1976. A police officer at Tri-County Schools and in What Cheer from 1976 until 1981. Charlie also managed the flea markets in What Cheer for many years.

Charlie's memory is honored by his two daughters, Terri Ament and her husband Ed and Sue Story and her husband Eugene, two brothers, Joseph Rutherford, and Tom Rutherford, and one sister, Ella Payne, and two grandchildren, Brian Willett and Ashlee Ament.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gloria and a brother, Gerald Rutherford.
