Marlene Marie Hammes, 71, of Sigourney, died suddenly Tues., Oct. 23, 2001, at the Keokuk County Health Center.

She was born Oct. 12, 1930, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Floyd and Mildred (Swain) Yahnke. She grew up in Van Buren Township, Keokuk County, spent a brief time in Detroit, Mich., during her childhood and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1949. She married Nicholas Constant Hammes at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek on Nov. 23, 1949. The couple lived and farmed in Van Buren Township, where they raised grain and livestock. She was an original member of the Stick To It 4-H Club. She was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, where she served as President of the Altar and Rosary Society, was a Past Councilperson and sang in the St. Mary Choir. She also sang with the Sweet Adelines' Ottumwa Overtones, where she was in charge of the costumes. She spent many years with needle and thread quilting at the Keokuk County Historical Society and was a member of the Mahaska Stitch-N-Quilt Guild. She served as Co-Superintendent of the Open Class Division at the Keokuk County Expo.

She is survived by her son, Nicholas; two granddaughters; and one sister, Ardis Hammes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband Nicholas in 1997.

Funeral services were held Sat., Oct. 27, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sigourney with the Rev. Philip Ryan officiaing. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
