Virginia P. Hammes, 81, of Sigourney, died Dec. 31, 1998.

She was born Aug. 8, 1917 the daughter of Joseph and Lucille R. Wolcott Perdue, in Whitefish, Mont. She graduated from High School in Aberdeen, S.D. She took nurses training in Huron, S.D. and graduated in 1939 as a R.N. She enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during World War II. Following the war she came to Iowa to work at the V.A. Hospital in Des Moines, where she met Lloyd. On June 3, 1947 she married Lloyd Hammes at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. They lived in Phoenix Ariz. for four years, returning to Iowa in 1951 and lived near Harper for 40 years. She returned to nursing in 1967 working at Maplewood Manor and Keokuk County Hospital, retiring in 1974. They moved to Sigourney in 1991. She was a member of the Lacey Kerr V.F.W. Post 2308 in Sigourney, St. Mary Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Kathy and her husband Royal Coulter; two sons, Raymond and his wife Kathie Hammes and David and his wife Melanie Hammes; six grandchildren, Christopher, Jeffrey and Matthew Coulter, Jesse, Abbie and Sara Hammes; and one brother, Steager J. Perdue.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were held Jan. 4 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, with the Rev. Philip Ryan offtciating. Burial was in St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper.
