Wilmer L. Clingan, 69, of rural What Cheer died Oct. 3, at his home.

He was born April 14, 1929, near Ollie to William Martin and Lillian Dick Clingan. He married Donna Andeway in 1952.

He was reared and educated in Ollie and graduated from Ollie High School. Soon after high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as a diesel mechanic aboard several ships during the Korean Conflict. During this time he also took part in the hydrogen bomb testing in the Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific. He later returned to Iowa and began farming in the Ollie area.

A naturalist and free-lance agronomist for much of his life, he had done extensive research in many areas including alternative crops and organic products. He also devoted much of his time to raising and training exotic animals on his farm near What Cheer. He was a member of the What Cheer Masonic Lodge.

Wilmer was also a Native American culture enthusiast and a very devoted father to his children.

He is survived by three sons; Steven, David and Michael; eight grandchildren; a brother, Ervin; four sisters, Pauline Sauter, Marjorie
Farrier, Marilyn Chmelar and Donna Williams.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Bruce.

Funeral services were Wednesday at Harden Funeral Home in What Cheer, the Rev. John DeBoef of the Hilltop Chapel officiating. Burial followed at Doggett Cemetery near Sigourney, where full military honors were given by members of the Sigourney American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Masonic services were Tuesday by members of the Universe Lodge #242 AF & AM of What Cheer.
