Harvey Smith, 79, of rural Martinsburg, died Aug. 11, 1999 at his home.

Service was Sunday at Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont, the Rev. Joseph Lloyd officiating. Interment was at Mount Zion Cemetery near Martinsburg, with graveside military rites conducted by Arendt-Bowlin-Stubbs American Legion Unit No. 83 of Hedrick.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 9, 1920, in Winfield, to Lester J. and Myrtle Ruth Wolfe Smith. He was a 1938 graduate of Martinsburg High School. He served in the United States Army in the European Theatre during World War II. On Feb. 7, 1942, he married, Lela Gwen McCreery in Kahoka, Missouri. He had been a farmer. He was affiliated with Hedrick-Martinsburg United Methodist church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Harold and Judy Smith; a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Jerry Tarpley; a granddaughter; and two brothers: Lyle Smith and Merle Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Dale Smith.
