Ronald D. Sawyer, 75, of What Cheer died Oct. 22, 1999 at Ottumwa Hospital of respiratory failure.

He was born April 2, 1924, north of What Cheer to Merle and Florence Blaylock Sawyer. He married Kathleen Claypool April 2, 1947, at Oskaloosa Christian Church.

He grew up and was educated in the Ollie and Delta areas and was graduated from Delta High School in 1942. He worked at Case Implement factory in Burlington. He then served in the Army during World War II. He then worked as a cream truck driver for North English Creamery. He farmed with his father in the Delta and What Cheer areas, moving to What Cheer in 1994. He was a freelance carpenter.

He was a member of the Clubb-Shipley Post #485 of the American Legion. He was a 50 year member of Universe Masonic Lodge #242, A.F. & A.M.

He is survived by his wife, a son, Alan; two daughters, Roseanne Kriegel and Linda Sawyer; six grandchildren; a brother, Leon; a sister, Lenore Lekin; and a half-sister, Alice Oliver.

He was preceded in death by a son Wayne.

The service was Monday at Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with Lynn Rumer officiating. Burial was in the Garrett Cemetery near Delta. Military honors were by members of the James Murphy Post #319 of the American Legion. A Masonic service was by members of Universe Lodge #242 A.F. & A.M. at 7 p.m.
