Waldo "Wally" Toomire, 84, died on Dec. 20, 1999 at the La Jolla Care center in San Diego, Calif.

He was born on July 7, 1915 in Martinsburg, the son of Camma and Cora Eckley Toomire. He finished High School and started working in his father's general store in Martinsburg. He traveled to Minnesota and from 1933 to 1936 played his saxophone in various small dance bands. He came back to his father's store in 1937 and continued to work there. He married Grace Vittetoe Feb. 22, 1938 in Martinsburg. After they married, they moved to Chicago and both worked at various jobs. In 1940 they moved to San Diego and he started working at Convair. They had their only child, Philip, in 1941. In 1959, they bought the Flamingo Motel in San Ysidro, Calif. He continued working at Convair, and retired from that job in 1965, and they both continued operating the motel, until they sold it in 1972. They retired and moved to La Jolla, Calif. They played music all around the San Diego area, with Grace playing the piano and organ and Wally singing and playing the sax and drums. They played for dances for over 20 years at the Eagle's Lodge. Music was their life. They were lifetime members of the Musician's Union. When they moved to La Jolla, they both joined the La Jolla First Presbyterian Church, and both sang in the choir.

A memorial service will be held at the La Jolla Presbyterian Church on Thurs., Jan. 6 at 2 p.m.
