Clea Octeva Mertz, 79, of Hayesville died Apr. 23, 1987 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney.

She was born at Hayesville on Jan. 9, 1908, the daughter of Harry and Belle Wiseman Gilliland. She was married to LeRoy Mertz on June 22, 1935 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua and resided on a farm east of Hayesville. Her husband preceded her in death on May 20, 1979. She was a member of the Hayesville Community Church.

She is survived by a son, William Mertz and a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (LeaAnn) Strohman; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Holland Gilliland.

Preceding her in death besides her husband were her parents and two brothers, Hubert Gilliland and Chauncey Gilliland.

Funeral services were held Sun. Apr. 26 at 1 p.m. at the Hayesville Community Church with the Revs. E. David Coates and E. Jessie Coates officiating. Interment was in the Pennington Cemetery, Sigourney.
