Lyle Vernon Smith, 78, died Monday Dec. 25, 2000 at the Keokuk Couhty Health Center in Sigourney.

He was born June 10, 1922, in Winfield to Lester J. and Myrtle Ruth Wolf Smith. He graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1940 and farmed in the Martinsburg and Hayesville areas. He married Willamina Vanderment on June 15, 1941. To this union one son was born,Ronald David on Dec. 25, 1942. He served as a tail gunner with the Army Air Force in the European Theater during World War II, then returned in 1946 and coached the Martinsburg boy's basketball team. He inherited a love for horses from his father and developed a large herd of Belgians which he showed at local fairs and the Iowa State Fair. He exhibited the Biggest Horse at the Iowa State Fair for three years. He was competitive, liked to win and was inducted into the Draft Horse Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair in 1996. In addition to farming, he was an auctioneer for all types of sales. He was in partnership with John Tremmel for 27 years and later worked at the Keoco Sale Barn in Sigourney for several years.

He is survived by his brother, Merle; an uncle, Herman Wolf; several nieces, nephews and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ronald David; and two brothers, Dale and Harvey.

Funeral services will be Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with the Rev. Vince Homan officiating. Interment will be at Pennington Cemetery in rural Sigourney with military rites by the American Legion Post #19 and the Lacey Kerr VFW Post #2308 in Sigourney.
