Adelia "Deal" Utterback, 99, of Sigourney, died Wed. Sept. 6, 2000 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after a short illness.

She was born May 3, 1901 to George and Ella Furnham Hayes south of Hayesville. She was the granddaughter of Joel W. Hayes for whom the town of Hayesville was named. She was educated in Hayesville and attended State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught school for 11 years in the rural schools of Keokuk County. She married Rex M. Utterback on Sept. 30, 1923 in Sigourney. They farmed for six years near Hayesville then operated Rex's Store for 18 years. She was an employee at Grahams Department Store in Sigourney for two years. She was an active member of the Hayesville Community Church, teaching classes for over 20 years. She belonged to the Golden Rule Workers of the church and the Union Hall Hustlers. She was very active in all community affairs.

She is survived by a sister Madge Long; nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1993; two sisters; three half-sisters; and three half-brothers.

Funeral services were held Sept. 9 at Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with the Rev. Clarence Hoven officiating. Interment was at Pennington Cemetery in rural Sigourney.
