John H. (Bud) Wallerich, 64, who served as Keokuk county sheriff for 24 years, died Sept. 23, 1981 following an accident at his home. Wallerich, of rural Sigourney, fell while riding a horse and was fatally injured. He died shortly following the accident at the Keokuk county hospital.

He was born May 19, 1917 east of Sigourney to Charles and Lydia Cassens Wallerich. He attended school in Sigourney and on Feb. 19, 1947 he married Colleen Fixmer in Oskaloosa.

He was a charter member and past president of Izaak Walton League, also a member of Lacey Kerr V.F.W. post 2308 and Leo R. Farmer American Legion post 19. He served in the army during WW II in Germany and Holland. He worked on the pipeline at Harper for two years and was elected Keokuk county sheriff in 1948 and served the position until 1972. He drove a truck for Kingsberry for seven years and was public relations salesman for Iowa State Sheriff’s Guild.

He is survived by his mother, wife, two sons, John and Richard, three daughters, Mrs. Vicky Yeargan, Diana Yoss and Mrs. Carol Moore. Also surviving are one brother, Calvin and four sisters, Katherine High, Louise Boldridge, Charlene Howard and Ruby Smith.

He was preceded in death by a sister Geneva Hammes.

Services were Oct. 3 at the United Methodist church with the Rev. George Mullins, Sigourney Christian church minister officiating. Burial was in the Bethel Methodist cemetery, east of Sigourney.
