Robert John (Bob) Mallinger, 61, Sigourney auctioneer and real estate broker for over 30 years, died unexpectedly Aug. 2, 1988 at Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was in Oskaloosa on business when he became critically ill. Mallinger was owner of Iowa Realty Auction Company and of Bob Mallinger and Associates real estate agency of Sigourney.

Robert Mallinger was born Aug. 23, 1926 at Brighton, son of Wendel and Mona Rhettler Mallinger. He was a graduate of Lockridge high school. He was a veteran of WW II, after which he was employed by the Iowa State Highway commission.

He married Bonnie Engle Sept. 14, 1949 at St. Mary Catholic Church of Sigourney.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter Mrs. James (Kathy) Lee; a granddaughter; and one sister, Mrs. Denis (Marguerite) Seaba.

He started in the auctioneering business in 1956, and had been in business in Sigourney continuously since that time. He was past president of the Iowa Auction Association, member of the National Auction Association, of Iowa Realtor Franchise, and of the Certified Auctioneers Institute. He had been named “Man of the Year” by the Iowa Auction Association. He was a member of the Lacey Kerr Post No. 2308, Veterans of Foreign Wars, was a past Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis Club, and a third degree member of Knights of Columbus.

Services were Thursday at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Clear Creek of which he was a member, conducted by the Rev. Robert Harness, assisted by the Rev. David Wilkening, pastor of the What Cheer, Keswick and North English churches and the Rev. Tom Mohr of St. Mary’s Church of Ottumwa. Burial was in Pleasant Grove cemetery, Sigourney.
