Frank E. Bottger

RICHLAND - Frank E. Bottger, 84, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1991, at the Jefferson County Hospital.

He was born June 16, 1907, in rural Ollie to Charles C. and Osee Fye Bottger. He lived all his life in the Ollie and Richland areas.

Bottger graduated in 1924 from Ollie High School. He was active in baseball and basketball until losing his eyesight in a hunting accident in 1930. He attended three summers of training at Vinton School For the Blind.

He married Harlene Moffet April 3, 1941 in Osceola.

He was a member of the Christian Church in Packwood, Richland Lions Club and the Scottish Rite Lodge of Davenport. He was the first blind man to join a masonic lodge in Iowa and was a member of AF & AM Lodge No. 38 in Richland.

Bottger was one of the top 250 proofreaders for the Commission of the Blind in Washington, D.C. and was a member of the state board of Iowa for independent living. He received the Governor's 1991 volunteer award.

Surviving are his wife; one step-son, William E. McKinzie of Cicero, Ill.; one brother, Herald C. Bottger of Ollie; and one sister, Gladys Clingman of Fairfield.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Gould Funeral Home in Richland with the Rev. Jane Jordan officiating.

A masonic service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with visitation after the service.

A general memorial has been established.
