Richard Rufus Green, the son of Hubert Arthur and Maude Viola Ewing Garrett, was born August 11, 1921 in What Cheer, Iowa. He lived in What Cheer, and. attended Colbert, Craig and Springfield Country Schools. He graduated from Delta High School in 1939. He married Dorothy Leathers in June 1941, with whom he had a son James and a daughter Reta. He entered the United States Army on August 17, 1945 and was a front line radio operator during World War II, serving with the 8th Regiment First Cavalry Division in the Philippine Islands and later in Japan. He was discharged February 28, 1946.

After his return, he farmed a few years and moved to Delta when he started working at John Morrell's Packing Plant in 1948. He worked there for 25 1/2 years until 1973. He later worked at Amana Refrigeration from 1973 until his retirement in 1986.

He was married to Mildred Dye on July 21, 1950 in Lancaster, Mo. and they had a daughter Cathy. He married Wauneita Maxine Riley on July 25, 1977 in Portsmouth, Va. She died February 8, 1993. On November 5, 1994, he married Arlene Stanley at the Open Bible Church in Oskaloosa.

He was a member of the Martinsburg Masonic Lodge #106 A.F. and A.M. of which he was Past Master and present treasurer, a member of the Cedar Rapids Consistory "Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, S.J. U.S.A." as a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Martinsburg Methodist Church and the American Legion in Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his father, his wife Wauneita, and a brother Donald.

Those left to mourn his passing are his wife Arlene, a son James Greene, two daughters Reta Mondia, Cathy Dobbins and her husband Randy, seven stepchildren, Mary Ann Smith, Ardeth Floden, Bill Stanley, Rita Shipley, Dorothy Pace, Charles Stanley, Debbi Cowman, 24 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, his mother Maude McMullen, two brothers James, Robert and a step sister Frances Jones of Hayesville.

Services at Holm Funeral Home, January 11, with the Rev. Dwayne Poe officiating. Burial at Garrett cemetery, Delta, Iowa.
