LaRue Knowler, 79, of Delta died Dec. 15, at her home. Services were Dec. 19 at the Fremont Funeral Chapel, Rev. Jim Bringman officiating. Burial was in Garrett Cemetery near Delta.

LaRue Knowler was born Sept. 20, 1926 in rural Fremont, to Alva and Lucy Springer Steele. She was graduated from Fremont High School in 1945. Following graduation she attended Ottumwa Heights College, where she obtained her teaching certificate. Later she received degrees from William Penn College in Oskaloosa and Drake University in Des Moines. Her teaching career began in Eddyville and Rose Hill Public Schools.

She was united in marriage to Harold Knowler, Nov. 27, 1947 in Lancaster, Mo. They resided in the White Oak community, and in 1952 moved to a farm near Delta. From 1948 until 1958 she stayed home to raise her family and help on the farm. In I959 she resumed her teaching career in Rose Hill, and then in 1960 she began teaching in the Pekin Community School District, where she remained until her retirement in 1988.

LaRue's enjoyments included her grandchildren, cooking, camping, collecting antiques, and gardening. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Delta Christian Church, Ladies Auxiliary, Trees Forever, Town and Country member, Retired Teachers Association, and the Delta Housing Board.

She is survived by her husband, Harold, of Delta, a son, Calvin(Teddi) Knowler, two daughters, Carol Ann (David) Hardeman and Cathy Knowler. Two brothers, David (Betty) Steele and George (Connie) Steele of Ottumwa. Three sisters, Maxine Strunk, a twin sister, LaOra (Ken) Miles, and Elnora Norris of Fremont. Four grandchildren, Carrie (Jay) Malin, Rebecca Knowler, Mark Knowler and Thad (Julia) Hardeman and one great grandson, Samuel Hardeman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, La Verne Steele and a sister Mary Ellen Steele.
