19 November 1970 - The Anamosa Eureka

OLIN - Ernest Earl Smith, 77, died Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Anamosa Community hospital.

A family prayer service was held at the Hayden Funeral home on Wednesday, Nov. 11, with Memorial services there at 10 a.m. The Rev. Lloyd Dutro, pastor of St. Paul's United Methodist church, conducted the services. Interment was in the Olin cemetery.

Pallbearers included Melvin Ramsey, Lee Crain, Raymond James, Harlan Henderson, John Amend and Carl Rohwedder.

Mrs. Ronald Rogers was organist. Blayney-Miner post Olin was in charge of the military rites.

He was born Nov. 12, 1892, son of Charles and Hattie Cory Smith, at Ironwood, Mich. His parents died when he was only three months old and he and his brother were reared by their maternal grandparents.

He attended school in Maquoketa and Olin. He entered military service in World War I on Sept. 5, 1918 and was discharged on Jan. 27, 1919.

On Sept. 3, 1919 he was married to Lucille Mitchell by the Rev. E. Carnell Wilson at Wyoming.

They farmed for several years but had moved to their home in Olin in 1943 and had lived here since.

He was a member of Blayney-Miner Post of the American Legion at Olin.

Survivors include his wife, some nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Malen, who died in 1941; his son Earl, Dec. 23, 1946, and a granddaughter, Dec. 25, 1946.
