11 November 1954 - The Anamosa Eureka

OLIN - John Oliver Clay, 71, died at Anamosa, Friday, Nov. 5, after a lingering illness.

Funeral service was conducted at the Campbell funeral home at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 7, with Rev. Lloyd Dutro in charge. Nellie Stivers sang, "Under His Wings" and "My Father Knows" accompanied by Elna Rohwedder.

Casket bearers were Raymond James, Gerald Kruse, Louis Guhl, Walter Scharff, Bliss Switzer and Frank Phillips. Interment was in the Olin cemetery.

Mr. Clay, son of George R. and Mary Wolfe Clay, was born in Woodbury county, Iowa, March 16, 1883.

Family came to Jones county while he was still quite young, settling in the Pleasant Hill community. He received his education in the school in the community.

As a young man he did tiling work in this area, later taking up the carpenter's trade, which he followed during the remaining active years of his life. He was injured in a fall about three and a half years ago and had been in failing health since that time.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers. His twin brother, Joe, preceded him by just 10 months.

He is survived by one brother, A. D. Clay, and two sisters, Eva Clay and Mrs. Zilda Shankland, all of Olin. Mr. Clay is also survived by an uncle, John Wolfe, Pawnee City, Nebr., and a number of nieces and nephews.
