23 September 1954 - The Anamosa Eureka

OLIN - Charles Guhl, 75, longtime resident of Olin, died Wednesday noon, Sept. 15, at Mercy hospital, Anamosa, where he submitted to surgery Sept. 13.

Funeral service was held at St. John's Lutheran church last Saturday afternoon, Sept. 18, with Rev. C. J. Mardorf officiating. Mrs. Ted Green, Postville, sang, "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Goodnight and Good Morning."

Serving as casket bearers were Joe Pieper, James Remley, Carl Feddersen, Ike Kearns, John Rieken and Harlan Henderson.

Born at Mechlenburg Schwerin, Germany, July 18, 1879, he was the son of Fred, sr., and Dora Guhl. At the age of 11 he emigrated to America with his family, settling on a farm west of Olin.

In April, 1805, he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Mr. Guhl was married to Bertha Kreger at St. John's Lutheran church, Olin, July 18, 1900. They were the first couple to be married in the church.

They were the parents of five children, two sons and three daughters.

Family farmed in Olin community, until they moved to town in 1938. Mr. Guhl was a member of St. John's church.

Surviving are his children, Louis Guhl, Mrs. Andrew Thomsen, Mrs. Louis Hartwig and Mrs. Fred Heffelfinger; 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. One brother, Louis Guhl, and a sister, Mrs. Louis Westphal, Onslow, also survive.

He was preceded in death by his wife, April 3, 1942; a son, Edward, at the age of 19; a brother Fred and his parents.
