OLIN - Joseph A. Clay, 70, long-time Olin resident, died at his home Wednesday, Jan. 6, after a brief illness.

Funeral service was held in the Evangelical United Brethren church, Olin, at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, with the Rev. M. Lloyd Dutro officiating.

Nellie Stivers sang "Shadows" accompanied by Mrs. Louis Rohwedder at the organ. Burial was in Olin cemetery.

Casket bearers were Raymond James, Lester Fall, Gerald Kruse, Louis Guhl, Walter Scharff and Bliss Switzer. Flower committee of the church was in charge of floral offerings.

Mr. Clay, son of George R. and Mary Wolfe Clay, was born in Woodbury county, March 16, 1883. He was one of eight children.

Family moved to Jones county while he was quite young, settling in the Pleasant Hill community southeast of Olin, where Mr. Clay attended the Pleasant Hill school.

April 6, 1910, he was married to Emma L. Wilson in New Mexico. Couple moved to Olin in 1911. One daughter was born to the couple.

Mr. Clay followed the carpenter trade in Olin and the surrounding community for the last 45 years.

Surviving are his wife; daughter, Mrs. Lois Olsen, Waterloo; two brothers, a twin, John, Anamosa, and A. D. Clay, Olin; and two sisters, Mrs. Zilda Shankland and Eva Clay, both of Olin.

Two grandchildren, Larry and Joyce Olsen, Waterloo; one uncle, John Wolfe, Pawnee City, Nebr., and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother and two sisters.
