Solemn High Mass was held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock for George Manternach who died Wednesday, Dec. 30, from injuries caused by a fall. The Celebrant of the Solemn High Requiem High Mass was the Rev. Carl Kurt; Rev. Albert Manternach was Deacon, the Rev. Matt Manternach the sub-deacon. Rev. Thomas Rhomberg was the master of ceremonies. Allen Kurt was the censer bearer and the acolytes included Nicholas Sigrand and Lloyd Welter. The Most Rev. Henry T. Rohlman, Arch Bishop of Dubuque gave the Absolution. Chaplins to the Arch Bishop were Msgr. T. Brady and Msgr. Ernest Ament. The Rev. David Wheeler was the master of ceremonies to the arch bishop. Rev. Eugene P. Lorenz preached the sermon and officiated at the graveside services. Present in the sanctuary were the Revs. Michael J. Mauer, D. Weydert, Friedman and Edgar Kurt, Harold Ginter and Churchill.

Services were conducted from the Sacred Heart Church to the Sacred Heart cemetery with burial there. The Devaney funeral home had charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers included William Burlage, John Hosch, Ronald Kurt, Gerald Manternach, Dewaine Recker and James Kurt.

George Manternach was born near Sand Springs, March 6, 1900, the son of Victor and Mary Kremer Manternach. He moved with his parents to a farm in Temple Hill and was educated in the rural schools of that vicinity.

On January 31, 1927 he was married to Clara Kurt by the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. Albers in St. Mary's church, Cascade. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in Wayne township where their home has been made since. He was a member of the Monticello Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name society of Sacred Heart parish and was also a former trustee of the parish for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife Clara, five sons, Paul, a student at Loras in Dubuque; Carl, a student at St. Bernard's Seminary in Dubuque; Melvin, stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas; and James and Bernard, still at home. Also surviving are three daughters, Ruth, Mary Jane and Joyce; the deceased's mother, Mrs. Victor Manternach, of Cascade; five brothers, Al and Ed of Manchester, Florian, Matt and Ramond of Cascade; three sisters, Mrs. Leo (Hilda) Kurt of Cascade, Mrs. Raymond (Cecelia) Recker of Bernard and Mrs. John (Ida) Faber of Hopkinton. He was preceded in death by his father in 1939 and a daughter, Joan, who died at the age of one year.
