Edward Bates, 74, died at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Mercy hospital, Anamosa, where he was hospitalized 15 days, suffering from a stroke and frozen feet.

He was hospitalized Dec. 2? when found at home south of Anamosa on the Morley road with frozen feet.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Goettsch funeral home with Rev. Walter D. Wigger conducting the service. Burial will be in Highland cemetery, near Morely.

Masonic rites will be conducted by the Anamosa Masonic lodge.

Born March 5, 1879, Mr. Bates lived all his life on the farm where he was born in Fairview township. He was the son of Ira Bates and Mary Anne Ganser Bates.

He was an active member of the Anamosa Masonic lodge and at one time held an office in the lodge.

Surviving are his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Joslin, Clinton, and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1940, and a grandson in 1952.
