24 August 1967 - Monticello Express

Jones county's sixth traffic fatality of the year was recorded at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22. Leslie Herman Schroeder, 51, rural Olin, was killed when the pickup truck he was driving went off a county road 4 1/2 miles south of Wyoming.

Schroeder apparently lost control of the westbound truck on a curve. He was thrown from the vehicle as it went into the north ditch. The truck continued back onto the road and then into the ditch a second time where it came to a stop.

The 1949 Ford pickup received only minor damage - a dent in the left front fender estimated at $25. It is owned by William H. Brodersen, rural Olin.

The highway patrol said that in this case seat belts would have saved a life if such equipment had been installed in the truck and had been in use.

Schroeder died from massive head injuries. He was found shortly after the accident by Wayne Bahnsen, who notified authorities.

Highway Patrolman Thomas Toner investigated the accident, assisted by Deputy Sheriff Arnold Latuska.
