March 22, 1951 - Monticello Express

Mrs. Ervin E. Reed, for many years a resident of Monticello, died at her home in Miami, Fla., early Tuesday morning. Death followed several years of failing health.

Funeral services will be conducted in Miami this afternoon, according to word received by relatives here. Burial services will be held in the family plot in Oakwood cemetery here next June.

Mrs. Reed was born in Monticello on November 28, 1876, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Doxsee. She was a sister of the late J. W. Doxsee, former publisher of the Monticello Express. Christened Ena Gwendolen Doxsee, she was known throughout her life as Gwen.

She attended Monticello public schools and, following her graduation, attended Iowa State College at Ames, winning her bachelor of science degree from that institution. After teaching for several years, she was married to Ervin E. Reed at Rolfe, Iowa, on April 16, 1901.

The couple moved to Monticello where Mr. Reed followed the practice of law. The family home was made here until several years after the death of Mr. Reed. In recent years her home has been made in Miami.

Mrs. Reed was an active worker in the Campfire program among Monticello girls. She was also a member of the '94 club here and a member of the Methodist church. She possessed considerable talent in the field of music and painting, and derived considerable pleasure in her last years from her painting.

Mr. and Mrs. Reed were the parents of three daughters, all of whom survive her death. They are Alice, Mrs. Nathan Miller and Mrs. William Mitchell, all of Miami. She is also survived by a brother, Clarence M. Doxsee of Redwood City, Calif.
