N. A. Rice, Rock Island, passed away at the Rock Island Rest home Friday morning, March 2. Mr. Rice was 100 years old October 2, 1950.

Services were held at Wheelan funeral home in Rock Island at 10 a.m. Monday morning and graveside services were rendered by Rev. R. V. Gildner at the Oakwood cemetery, Monticello, where interment was made.

Mr. Rice was the father of one son, John, who is now living in Andover, Ill. Relatives from the Monticello vicinity include Charles Rice, a nephew, and Mrs. Lottie Coates, Mrs. Hattie Tedrow and Mrs. Martha Moore, all three being grand nieces.

The Rice family were residents of Monticello for many years and after having farmed near Monticello for 30 years, they moved to another farm near Chisholm, Ia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie, and many other close relatives.

In 1949 when he celebrated his 99th birthday, he spent it with his son John, in Andover, and was very active at that time, and only in the last year did he become ill and retired to the care of the rest home. Mr. Rice was an ardent fan of the Great Jones County Fair and attended it regularly until two years ago. He was one of the few men who helped form the Monticello City Park and helped plant many of the trees which are now standing. He was also affiliated with the creameries of this vicinity.
