Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Bertram E. Barnts, 68, of Onslow, who died of a heart attack while driving his car near Oxford Jct. about 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Barnts' car left the road and rolled into a thicket about a quarter mile north of Oxford Jct. on highway 136. Dr. J. L. Bailey, Jones county coroner, ruled that Mr. Barnts died of a heart attack before the car left the road.

Services were held at First Presbyterian church in Monticello with the Rev. John Benjamin Wild officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery, with military services conducted by the Monticello Drill Team.

Mr. Barnts was born May 23, 1898, at Monticello, the son of James Herbert and Mary Ann Fox Barnts. He received his education in the Monticello school and served with the U.S. Army during World War I.

After returning from the service, he worked for the Milwaukee railroad before accepting a position with the U.S. Postal department. He worked for the Postal department in the Chicago area for 25 years, retiring in 1945.

He was married to Justine Ponzo May 23, 1933. The couple moved to Onslow in 1959.

Mr. Barnts was a member of the First Presbyterian church on Monticello, the VFW Post No. 1683 of Monticello and the M.O.C. of Chicago.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Frans (Jacqueline) Van Es of Encinitas, Calif.; one grandson; two sisters, Kathryn Barnts Underwood of Monticello and Mrs. Earl (Ruth) Pierce of Cedar Rapids, and three brothers, George and Eugene Barnts of Monticello and Earl Barnts of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Frank.

Pallbearers were Howard Boots, Phillip Dart, Herbert Barnts, Raymond Ehlts, Robert Barnts and Robert Simmons.
