MONTICELLO - Funeral services were held yesterday (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian church for John Tschantz, Sr., 76, who died at his home near Monticello Monday at 8 a.m. He had suffered from cerebral hemorrhage since Aug. 10.

Rev. John Benjamin Wild officiated at the services. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery.

John Tschantz was born near Monticello Sept. 27, 1889, the son of Chris and Emma Thomas Tschantz. He was educated in the Jones county schools.

He married Mary Margaret Rickels on March 29, 1916, and they farmed near Monticello. In 1950 they moved to their present home and Mr. Tschantz did carpenter work.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian church and the K of P Lodge of Monticello.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Herbert (Lucille) Balsiger of Monticello, Mrs. T. J. (Kathleen) Bassett of Riverside, Calif. and Mrs. Brad (Lois) Cantrell of Rialto, Calif.; four sons, Colin L., Vernon E. and John H., all of Monticello, and Stanley D. of Scotch Grove and 12 grandchildren.

He is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Charles Wernimont, Mrs. Gottlieb Bronemann and Mrs. Steve Patersen of Monticello and Mrs. Emil Balsiger of Chester, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and an infant daughter, Edna.

Pallbearers were Raymond Prull, Lloyd Oswald, Herman Steuri, Henry Bader, Paul Meier and Fred Zumbrunnen.
