December 3, 1981 - Midland Times

Verna Kulhaby, 78, of Oxford Junction was killed Dec. in a two-car accident one and one-half miles west of Wyoming on Highway 64. Four other persons were injured and "jaws of life" were required to extricate accident victims.

Mrs. Kulhaby was a passenger in a car driven by Neil Bright, 78, of Oxford Junction. Bright was eastbound when his car collided head-on with an auto driven by Don Starry, 49, of Olin. Both drivers and two passengers were taken to a Maquoketa hospital.

Passengers were Helen Kelley, 74, and Lillian Ingersen, 71, both of Oxford Junction.

December 17, 1981 - Midland Times

Services were held at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Oxford Junction Dec. 5 for Verna Ann Kulhavy, 78, who died following a two-car accident near Wyoming Dec. 3. Rev. Douglas Holmgren officiated the 11 a.m. services with burial at Mayflower Cemetery, Oxford Junction.

Mrs. Kulhavy was born Dec. 28, 1902, the daughter of Louis and Josephine Quistorf Lamp of Bennett. She received her education in the Bennett School system. She had been employed at the Bennett Post Office and later at the Bennett State Bank.

On March 12, 1924, she married Ray Mowry. Mr. Mowry preceded her in death in 1961. She married Frank Kulhavy in September 1962. He preceded her in death in 1976.

Mrs. Kulhavy spent most of her married life near Oxford Junction farming and then in town following her retirement. She was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church and the Martha Circle.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Audrey) Fritz, North English; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Miller, New Liberty; neices and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Pallbearers were Hurley Hall, Terry Hall, Ray Mowry, Marlan Ashcraft, Gayle Ahrendsen, Donald Benhart. Virgil Mowry was an honorary pallbearer.
