MONTICELLO - Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) for Mrs. Jake (Josephine) Merfeld, 84, of Monticello, at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart church. Burial will be in St. Paul cemetery in Worthington.

She died Monday morning at Johnson nursing home in Monticello. She was born Dec. 30, 1880, at Worthington, the daughter of Lorenz and Barbara Johnson Besler.

Survivors include four sons, Nicholas of Dubuque, Henry of Marion, Raymond of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Albert of Monticello; also three daughters, Mrs. Earl (Loretta) Brown of Strawberry Point, Mrs. Al (Marie) Miller of Iowa City, and Mrs. John (Dolley) Janssen of Monticello; 34 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Henry Besler of Dyersville, Anthony Besler of Dubuque, and William Besler of Worthington; one sister, Mrs. Ernest McDonough of Monticello.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1951; a son, Lester; and a daughter in infancy.

Pallbearers are Gary Janssen, Dean Miller, Ralph Brown, Thomas Brown and Merlin and David Merfeld.
