MONTICELLO - George D. Moats, 83, died at Johnson Nursing home Friday, March 11, following an illness of eight years. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from First Presbyterian church with the Rev. John Benj. Wild officiating. Burial was made in the Scotch Grove cemetery.

Born Oct. 12, 1882 at Elgin, he was a son of A. P. and Addie Helm Moats. He was married to Gertrude R. Peters of Elgin Nov. 18, 1902. They farmed in the Elgin community for two years and then moved to the Scotch Grove community. He was the first rural mail carrier in Scotch Grove and farmed in that vicinity for a number of years.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian church in Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sept. 30, 1965, a daughter Eva and a son and daughter in infancy as well as three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include five children: Sheldon of Daville, Ill., Reece and Mrs. Donald (Wilma) Clark of Monticello, Mrs. Edwin (Georgia) Caspers, Wauwatosa, Wis., Mrs. Wilbert (Imogene) Doden of Monticello; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Sam (Grace) Thompson of Center Jct., and one brother, Kent Moats of Big Timber, Mont.

Pallbearers included Wesley Hanken, Keith Clark, Clair Lamphier, Olin Howie, Jr., Keith Hagen and Gary Doden.
