15 September 1966 - Monticello Express

The second traffic fatality in less than two weeks time claimed the life of David Lynel Emerson, 19, Wyoming, at 9:45 p.m. Saturday four miles north of Monticello on highway 38. This brings the traffic toll for Jones county to four for 1966.

Emerson was killed when the car he was driving went out of control on a curve. The car jumped across a railroad track, went into a creek bed 15 feet below, flipped end over end across a fence and into a ditch. It landed on its top against a tree.

The car traveled about 475 feet before coming to a stop. The car, a 1965 Chevrolet sports coupe belonging to Merlin Brunscheen of Wyoming, was demolished.

Emerson, who was pinned beneath the wreckage, was pulled out by passerby. He was taken to John McDonald hospital by the Monticello emergency unit and pronounced dead of a broken neck and skull fracture.

Funeral services for Emerson were held Tuesday morning at Zion Lutheran church in Wyoming. The Rev. Luther Wachholz, pastor of Wayne Zion church, rural Monticello, officiated. Burial was in the Wyoming cemetery.

Pallbearers were Merlin Brunscheen, Henry Harms, Marvin Millsap, Jerry Catlett, Harlan Brinkman and Ed Husman.

David Emerson was born July 19, 1947 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Howard and Alta Doden Emerson. He was a 1965 graduate of Midland Community school and had been employed by Big Bill's Feed Co., Onslow.

He is survived by his parents; two brothers Don and Jerry at home; two sisters, Mrs. Gene Ailkman, Muncie, Ind., and Kathy at home, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Webber, Center City.
