MONTICELLO - Samuel C. Holmes, 83, died Saturday, May 22, at John McDonald hospital following an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were held from Goettsch Funeral home Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. John Benj. Wild officiated. Burial was at Oakwood cemetery.

He was born Aug. 20, 1881 in Delaware county, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Holmes. He received his education in Cascade and was employed at the creamery and produce company. For the past 30 years, he operated a grocery store located on East First street where he made his home.

He was married to Mary Gesie who with one daughter Berniece died in 1930. He then married Grace Haynes on Nov. 22, 1930.

Survivors include his wife Grace; three children, Mrs. Norman (Ethel) Andrews of Marion, Samuel Jr. and Elmer, both of Monticello; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Flora Smith of Cedar Rapids.
