21 November 1963 - Monticello Express

Funeral services for two Express area men killed in a double traffic accident Saturday night on county road "A" six miles west of Monticello were held yesterday (Wednesday). The two men, who were cousins, were Jones county's fourth and fifth traffic fatalities of the year.

Services for Freddie Ray Appleby, 23, Anamosa, were held at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Methodist church, Monticello. The Rev. Howard Eldrenkamp officiated. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery.

A third man, Johnny Appleby, 19, Monticello, brother of the dead man, was seriously injured and is in fair condition in University hospitals, Iowa City. He suffered a dislocated hip, fracture of the left leg, bruises and abrasions.

The accident occurred when cars driven west by Coblentz and Freddie Appleby went out of control on a curve in front of the Harry Gerjets farm, plunged down a 10-foot embankment on the north side of the road and rolled over. All three men were thrown from the cars.

The cars, which are believed to have been following one another, landed 90 feet apart. Investigating officers said that the Coblentz car traveled 484 feet 5 inches and the Appleby car 385 feet 10 inches. The distance was measured from the beginning of skid marks on the pavement to where the cars came to a halt.

Just 15 months ago, one of the victims, Freddie Appleby, wrecked a car about 100 yards east of Saturday night's fatal scene. He received only minor injuries in the first accident.

Freddie Ray Appleby was born May 20, 1940 in Hopkinton, the son of Fred and Luella Boots Appleby. He attended the Hopkinton schools. On Aug. 31, 1960, he was married to Diane Lewis at Anamosa. He was employed at the Monticello Plywood Co.

Survivors include his wife and two children, Tina Marie and Freddie, Jr. of Anamosa; his parents of Monticello; six sisters, Mrs. Fay Sills and Mrs. Saur of Alameda, Calif., Mrs. James Fields of Cascade, Mrs. Robert DeWald of Olin, Mrs. Raymond Taylor of Marion and Mary of Monticello; and seven brothers, Paul of Olin and Cletus, John, Larry, Allen, Thomas and Timothy of Monticello.
