The third and fourth traffic deaths of the year were recorded Monday in Jones county as the result of two separate accidents.

The two victims were Wayne Lurkens, 19, Anamosa, who was killed in a head-on collision near Anamosa at 11:45 p.m. and Robert Steffen, 21, Cascade, who died at 3:50 a.m. from injuries received in a one-car crash Sunday evening near Cascade.

Monday night's accident occurred 1.6 miles southwest of Anamosa on old highway151. Lurkens, who was headed southwest, lost control of his car on a curve, sideswiped a Ford pickup truck driven by Jack Eugene Adams, 30, Cedar Rapids, and collided head-on with a 1966 Ford driven by Jerome Baum.

Lurkens was dead on arrival at Anamosa Community hospital. He suffered massive internal injuries. Adams was not hurt.

Damage to the left side of Adam's pickup was estimated at $850. Lurken's 1961 Pontiac and Baum's car were total losses.

Funeral services for Lurkens will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Wayne Zion Lutheran church, rural Monticello. The Rev. Luther Wachholz, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, the former Evelyn Siebels of Amber and two-month-old son; his father, John of Anamosa; his mother, Mrs. Lyle Eastman of Bode; a brother, Ralph of Cedar Rapids, two sisters, Mrs. James Arnold of Garland, Texas and Joyce of Bode, one half-brother, Kenneth Aschtgen of Dubuque and two half-sisters, Carol Eastman of Bode and Mrs. Ronald Siebels of Center Jct.
