MONTICELLO - William Rickels, 70, died early Tuesday at his home at 324 West Varvel in Monticello from a sudden heart attack. Funeral services are planned for Friday, April 9, at 1:30 p.m. from St. Matthew Lutheran church in Monticello. The Rev. Anton Kirkegaard will officiate and burial will be made at the Prairie Hill cemetery near Monticello. Military services will be at the cemetery by the Monticello Drill Team.

Born April 23, 1894, near Monticello, he was the son of Harm and Maria Hinrichs Rickels. He attended the Jones county rural schools and was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran church and the Monticello VFW. On Dec. 15, 1920, he married Sena Monk of Monticello and they farmed near Monticello until 1946 when the couple and their family moved to Monticello. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and four sisters.

Survivors include his wife Sena at home and three sons, Lavern E. of Anamosa, Donald J. of Monticello and Raymond D. of Mt. Vernon. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, two brothers, Henry and Fred, both of Anamosa, two sisters, Mrs. George (Minnie) Poppe of Langworthy and Mrs. Ed (Martha) Harms of Amber.
