MONTICELLO - Catherine Louisa Perley, 95, died at John McDonald hospital in Monticello Sunday, Nov. 17 following an illness of one week.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from Goettsch Funeral home in Monticello with the Rev. Glen Bender in charge. Interment was made at Bowens Prairie cemetery northeast of Monticello.

Miss Perley was born Nov. 7, 1868 at Bowens Prairie near Monticello, daughter of Chauncey Burton and Sarah Thayer Penniman Perley. She was one of the early graduates of the Monticello high school; also of the Mount Holyoke college and the Home Economics Institute of Chicago, Ill. She was the oldest member of the Congregational church and was a member of the Friday club.

For 35 years she was active in teaching. She taught in the rural schools of the Monticello area; also in Rusk, of Memphis, Tenn, the negro college in Mobile, Ala. and in Tougaloo college at Jackson, Miss. After her retirement, she returned to Monticello in 1940, spending her summers in Little Sioux.

Survivors include nieces and nephews: Harriet Perley, James Perley, Sadie Willis, Dorothy Warren, all of Little Sioux; Norma Beckman of Atwater, Calif., and a sister-in-law, Mrs. James Perley. There are also 11 grandnieces and nephews and 19 great-grandnieces and nephews.
